Goals of Apartheid (1948-1994)
To reserve within the confines of the African's designated homeland rights and freedoms, but that outside it blacks were to be treated as aliens.
The number of white people compared to colored in South Africa was so low that the white people felt threatened and when they gained power in the government through the National Party, they wanted to have control over the colored so there was no threat to their survival.
- to completely separate the white minority and the non-white majority
- to separate non-whites from each other
- to divide black South Africans along tribal lines in order to decrease their political power
- to keep the white population in control of South Africa
- to legally establish segregation
- to encourage harsher treatment toward non-whites
Published in a Pamphlet on December 22, 1942 by the leader of the Transvaal National Party:
"1. That Native should not be allowed to own land among white people, but that so far the ownership of land is concerned the should be confined to the various Native reserves;
2. That Natives and coloured people in our towns and villages should not live in European residential areas, but that there should be separate residential areas for them, that is to say separate Native and coloured villages; and
3. That in our factories, etc. Europeans and non-Europeans should not be allowed to work among one another, but separately, and that certain sorts of work should be reserved for the Europeans"
